The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a strong warning to lawyers and courts, urging strict adherence to the law as Nigeria approaches the 2027 General Elections.
In a stern statement, the association expressed concern over growing attempts to drag the judiciary into internal political party disputes, despite clear provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 barring such actions.
The NBA decried what it described as “dangerous abuse” of court processes, accusing some legal practitioners of filing suits and securing interim orders in clear violation of the law, a trend it warned could undermine democracy and the rule of law.
Citing Section 83 of the Act, the body stressed that courts lack jurisdiction over intra-party matters and must not grant injunctions in such cases, warning that continued disregard could turn the judiciary into a tool for political manipulation.
The association also put lawyers on notice, cautioning that those engaging in such practices risk facing disciplinary action before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.
Calling for restraint, the NBA urged the judiciary to resist political pressure and uphold the sanctity of the law, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy must be protected from “forum shopping” and legal manoeuvres aimed at gaining unfair political advantage.
