“A grave affront to the majesty of the court,” says Bar on X
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has taken a firm stand against the renewed enforcement of the Police tinted glass permit policy, describing the action as a grave affront to the majesty of the court and a clear subversion of the rule of law.
In a strongly worded post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the NBA faulted the Nigeria Police Force for resuming enforcement of a policy it insists remains unlawful and restrained by existing court decisions. The association warned that the development poses a serious threat to constitutional governance and respect for judicial authority.
According to the NBA, no law enforcement agency has the discretion to ignore court orders while purporting to enforce the law. “When the Police act in defiance of the courts, they undermine public confidence in justice and weaken the pillars upon which democracy stands,” the Bar stated.
The association also raised concerns over the likely return of harassment, extortion, and arbitrary arrests of motorists, stressing that past experiences with the tinted glass permit regime were marked by abuse and inconsistency.
Legal practitioners under the NBA umbrella cautioned that the issue goes beyond traffic regulation, noting that it touches on the supremacy of the Constitution and the binding nature of court judgments. They urged the authorities to immediately suspend enforcement and seek lawful clarification rather than resort to actions that could plunge the country into legal uncertainty.
The NBA reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights, warning that continued disregard for court orders would not be tolerated in a constitutional democracy.
As the debate intensifies, the Bar’s message is clear: the law must rule, and the courts must be obeyed—by citizens and the state alike.
