The Nigerian Navy announced plans to reinforce its troops and equipment in the Lake Chad region to combat Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.
During a visit to Baga Naval Base in Borno State, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla commended soldiers for their resilience in repelling recent attacks and pledged increased support.
The CNS said that his visit was aimed at assessing the troops’ operational readiness and understanding the challenges confronting them on the frontline.
He highlighted the base’s strategic importance and called for improved coordination among security forces to strengthen the fight against terrorism.
Vice Admiral Ogalla praised the troops for their swift response and resilience, noting that their successful defense not only protected critical military infrastructure but also sent a strong message to insurgents operating in the region.
“You’ve shown the enemy that this base is not a soft target,” Ogalla said while addressing personnel.
“Anytime they think of attacking, they will now have to think twice.”
The CNS, who was accompanied by the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, stressed that the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is fully committed to the welfare and operational needs of troops on the frontlines.
“All necessary support—logistics, manpower, equipment—is being prioritized to give you every advantage in this fight,” he said.
The Nigerian Navy has played a key role in joint security operations in the Northeast, particularly in the Lake Chad region, which remains a critical zone in the fight against terrorism and cross-border criminality.
This move reflects the Nigerian Navy and government’s renewed commitment to stabilizing the Lake Chad basin territory and enhancing socio-economic growth for the public and military effectiveness in the region.
