Geospatial Technology to Enhance Security, Trade, and Revenue Generation
The Nigeria Customs Service NCS has announced a nationwide initiative to automate all its border stations, leveraging advanced geospatial intelligence to improve security operations and streamline trade processes across the country.
This significant development was disclosed during a press briefing on April 8, 2025, at the Customs House in Katsina. The event was part of a working visit by the Assistant Comptroller General of Customs for Zone B, A.A.S. Oloyede.
ACG Oloyede highlighted that this initiative represents a major stride in aligning Nigeria’s border control operations with global standards. He noted that the digital overhaul would not only reduce delays and increase revenue collection, but also curb corruption and enhance transparency within Customs operations. “With this shift, we are embracing smarter ways of protecting our borders and facilitating trade,” he said.
Reacting to the development, the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Mallam Dikko Umar Radda (Ph.D.), expressed strong support for the initiative, describing it as a progressive and much-needed intervention. While receiving the visiting ACG at the Government House, Governor Radda emphasized the positive impact the technology would have on economic growth, national security, and border community development. “This kind of innovation will boost intelligence gathering and make our borders safer and more efficient,” he remarked.
The ACG also commended Comptroller Abba-Aji Idriss, who heads the Katsina Area Command, for his leadership and the enhanced cooperation between Customs personnel, sister agencies, community stakeholders, and government officials in the region.
The automation agenda is part of the Nigeria Customs Service’s broader commitment to digital transformation, aimed at building a more efficient and accountable system that meets the demands of today’s interconnected global economy.
