National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) has unveiled Save80 Clean Cookstoves that would assist to reduce indiscriminate felling of trees for firewoods, global warming and protect users from lung cancer.
The Director-General of the council, Dr. Salisu Dahiru, stated this at the launch of the cookstoves in Katsina on Wednesday.
He said that the solutions are efficient household appliances recommended by the council for use in desertification prone states, especially the Northern parts of the country.
Dahiru, represented by Mr. Kingsley Nwahuba, a Director in the council, said that Nigeria is seen as one of the countries with high rate of deforestation that causes global warming that lead to climate change in the world.
He expressed readiness of the council to partner with such organizations in addressing the menace of climate change in the country.
“The council is in charge of policies that have to do with climate change related activities in the country.
“Specifically, in the areas of renewable energy, decarbonization of the industries, efficient household appliances.
“Deforestation causes global warming by cutting down of trees in our environment.
“We are proud to partner with the coy because of the product they have invented that have so many benefits to people and the environment.
“The Save80 stoves have serious impact in curbing deforestation, gives us good environment and ameliorate the effects of climate change,” he said.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Advisory Board of the firm, Amb. Farouk Yabo, said that they were into a partnership with the council, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure and the National Agency for the Great Green Wall to reduce the menace of the climate change in the country.
He noted that the Save80 Stoves reduces deforestation by 80, gives clean environment and save women who are involved in cooking from lung cancer as a result of using firewoods.
“We realized that when give a product free, a lot of people will end up selling them even to where they are not supposed to be used.
“You can see it even in Ghana or in Southern Nigeria that are not suffering much from desertification.
“But we decided to give it at a highly subsided rate by the German institution and some institutions in Nigeria,” he said
Musa Lawal, company’s representative said that they focus attention on reducing the emission of carbon dioxide which is one of the green house gases that causes global warming.
“We are working with governments and provide sectors to reduce the menace.
“The stove has two pots, emit less smoke and save firewoods by 80 per cent, which means saving desertification by 80 per cent,” he said.
