Governor Umar Namadi has secured a major breakthrough in his administration’s push to transform Dutse International Airport into a full-fledged cargo hub, following approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to begin installation of cargo facilities.
The governor announced the development on Sunday during a routine facility inspection and calibration exercise carried out at the airport by a technical team from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, Governor Namadi described the day as significant in Jigawa’s aviation advancement drive.
“Today is an important day for us in our efforts to ensure that all airport facilities in Jigawa State operate in accordance with best practices,” the governor stated while interacting with the NAMA team.
He stressed the importance of strict adherence to global aviation standards and commended the airport management for its proactive commitment to safety through continuous calibration of navigational equipment.
Fielding questions from journalists, Namadi confirmed that discussions with FAAN had yielded formal approval to commence the installation of cargo infrastructure as a precursor to the airport’s full cargo operations.
“We have held discussions with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and they have granted approval for us to begin installing cargo facilities at the airport, preparatory to the full launch of cargo operations,” he said confidently.
The NAMA team leader, speaking during the visit, explained that their mission was to evaluate navigational aids at the airport and ensure compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
He added that after the ground checks, the team would proceed with flight calibration to assess equipment performance and certify optimal operations.
With the FAAN green light secured and technical assessments underway, Dutse Airport appears poised for a strategic upgrade that could position Jigawa as a key cargo gateway in northern Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
