The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a woman, Fatima Muhammed, over alleged mutilation of the Nigerian currency in Maiduguri.
Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate swooped on the suspect after a viral video surfaced on TikTok showing her using a ₦500 note in an act deemed abusive to the national currency.
Security sources said the video sparked outrage online, prompting swift action by the anti-graft agency, which tracked and arrested the suspect within the Maiduguri metropolis.
The EFCC confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing investigation, adding that she will be charged to court upon conclusion of inquiries.
The arrest underscores renewed enforcement against naira abuse, as authorities warn that acts of mutilation or disrespect to the currency will attract strict legal consequences.
