A traditional ruler in Bodinga local government area of Sokoto state, Alhaji Bawa Sani, has called for increased women empowerment as best ways to prevent Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the society.
Sani, Turakin Bodinga made the call during a town hall dialogue on prevention of GBV organized by Sokoto state government in collaboration with UN Women on Wednesday in in Bodinga local government area.
He called for reduplication of more Girls Safe Space centers schools to empower more girls and reduce streets hawking.
He commended the United Nation agencies for enhancing peoples lives through different interventions.
The monarch explained that the educational supports being implemented in his domain especially Safe Space initiative have enhanced access to education especially girls and appealed for more support to argument government efforts.
According to him, healthcare services and other empowerment services enhanced peoples lives and also commended donor agencies for their commitments fight against Gender Based Violence (GBV), Vesicovaginal Fistula and others.
In her presentation, Safina Sani from Life Helpers Initiative an NGO, listed the benefits of livelihood supports and commended Sokoto state government for facilitating such initiative.
Sani said interventions have improved women healthcare especially reproductive health services, awareness of Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), reduction of GBV cases with support to community groups and access to education.
He said the efforts have argument women access to quality healthcare as well as access to education at all levels.
Speaking also, Director Women in the Sokoto State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Hajia Hauwa’u Umar-Jabo, said the sensitization was to reduced cases of GBV in the communities.
Umar-Jabo said participants were educated on Sexual and Gender Based Violence/Violence Against Women and Girls (SGBV/VAWG), Family Planning (PF) and Harmful Practices (HP) including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Early Child Marriage in various communities.
She said participants would be educated on the importance of acquiring business skills and encouraged them to embark on businesses that would argument our family income beside hygiene and concentration on our studies and moral training as well as discipline.
The event witnessed discussion on causes of GBV,
types, challenges, strategies on how to eliminate the menace as well as roles of stakeholders on reporting and feedback mechanism.
