Minister Umahi: Coastal Project Clears Hurdles

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has responded decisively to recent queries regarding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road contract.

In a detailed statement, Umahi clarified that the 700-kilometer, 10-lane highway project was meticulously planned and executed within the bounds of due process.

Emphasizing the project’s model as an Engineering, Procurement, Construction plus Financing (EPC+F) endeavor, Umahi outlined the comprehensive funding structure.

He highlighted the Federal Government’s partial funding alongside investor contributions, a strategy meticulously reviewed by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BBP) and approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Umahi underscored the thoroughness of the approval process, noting the adherence to legal frameworks such as the Procurement Act.

He elucidated on the project’s environmental considerations, citing the progressive Environment and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) certification obtained after rigorous evaluations and stakeholder engagements.

Addressing concerns about property impact along the route, Umahi assured that compensation protocols adhere strictly to legal standards, with only verified property owners eligible for compensation.

He emphasized the project’s redesigned route aimed at minimizing disruptions to existing infrastructure and communities.

In his closing remarks, Umahi reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to transparency and legal compliance, ensuring that every step taken aligns with national regulations and principles.
