Cotonou — A swift attempt by renegade soldiers to topple the Beninese government has failed, with loyalist forces reclaiming control of the army, national television, and the Presidential Palace, authoritative diplomatic sources confirmed on Saturday.
According to AFP and the Beninese Foreign Ministry, the French-backed government moved decisively to neutralise the mutineers shortly after they made an unsuccessful bid to seize key state institutions. The attempted putsch triggered brief tension in the capital, but security forces loyal to President Patrice Talon quickly re-established order.
National television resumed normal broadcast after a short disruption, while military command announced that the chain of command “remains intact and firmly loyal to the constitutional government.”
The Foreign Ministry described the situation as “fully under control,” assuring citizens and international partners that Benin’s democratic institutions were never in real danger.
As calm returns to Cotonou, government officials say investigations are underway to identify the masterminds behind the failed coup, vowing that “no attempt to destabilise the republic will be tolerated.”
