A routine river crossing turned into a night of mourning on Saturday as a canoe carrying dozens of passengers capsized near Garbi community in Nguru Local Government Area, claiming at least 25 lives, including four primary school pupils.
The tragedy unfolded at about 7:48 p.m. on January 3, 2026, when the canoe—laden with 52 passengers—was en route from Guri Local Government Area to Garbi town. Mid-journey, the vessel overturned, plunging passengers into the water and triggering a frantic rescue effort by nearby residents.
Local sources said the victims were returning from Adiyani town after daily activities. Many of the survivors are fisherfolk, farmers, and petty traders, whose livelihoods depend on the waterways that crisscross the area.
As of press time, 13 passengers have been rescued alive, while 14 others remain missing, raising fears the death toll could rise. Search-and-rescue operations continue, with security agencies, emergency responders, and community volunteers combing the river through the night and into Sunday.
Authorities have expressed deep condolences to bereaved families and pledged full support. In a swift response, Mai Mala Buni directed that immediate medical and logistical assistance be provided to survivors receiving treatment, while relief efforts are coordinated for affected households in Nguru and Guri LGAs.
Community leaders renewed calls for safer river transport practices, especially during evening hours, as grief hangs heavy over Garbi—where families now wait anxiously for news of the missing and mourn lives cut tragically short.
