The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two men, including the leader of a masquerade group, for allegedly leading a violent cultural display that turned into a public disturbance involving armed blockade and extortion.
According to the Command, the suspects, led by 45-year-old Uwem Umanah — leader of the “Ekpo” masquerade — were accused of attacking passersby, blocking a public highway, and extorting money from motorists and pedestrians. Some of the victims reportedly included NYSC members.
Police sources said a distress call alerted operatives to the scene, where the masquerade group, armed with machetes, sticks, and spears, was intimidating members of the public.
Further investigation revealed that Umanah had directed his followers to hold the illegal display despite an existing ban on masquerade processions.
In a related operation, 34-year-old David Michael of Ikot Obong Edong Village was also arrested while preparing to invade another community, fully dressed in masquerade attire.
Both suspects have been charged to court following police investigations.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, fsi, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to law and order, warning that no form of criminality or cultural misuse would be tolerated.
“The police will not allow anyone to hide under cultural practices to threaten peace or extort innocent citizens,” he said, urging residents to continue sharing timely information to help maintain public safety.
