Abuja — The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), has urged Nigerian families to take the fight against drug abuse into their homes by acquiring drug test kits to monitor their children.
Marwa, speaking at the Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA) Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Competition 2025 in Abuja, said early detection remains the strongest weapon against addiction.
> “It is better to act early when intervention is still possible than to wait until drug use becomes full-blown addiction,” Marwa warned.
He lamented that substance abuse is robbing the nation of its future, describing it as both a personal tragedy for victims and a national disaster.
The NDLEA chief told students that drug abuse destroys ambition and extinguishes hope, while praising DEPOWA’s theme “Live Free, Stay Clean” as a timely reminder of the dangers facing today’s youth.
Marwa charged parents, guardians, and teachers to stay close to children, pay attention to warning signs, and use sports as a positive outlet. He also advised schools to set up drug-free clubs, promising NDLEA’s full support in building a healthier generation.
“Sports should be about discipline, hard work, and integrity, not shortcuts driven by drugs. To every student here: saying no to drugs is saying yes to your future,” he declared.
In her remarks, DEPOWA President, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, said the competition was designed as a sports-driven intervention programme to empower secondary school students with awareness, engagement, and positive peer influence.
