A philanthropist, Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, has covered medical bills worth over N257 million for approximately 21,000 vulnerable patients in Katsina State, between 2016 and now.
A board of trustees member of the Mangal Foundation, Alhaji Hassan Kabir, revealed this at the weekend in Katsina during the screening of patients with eye conditions.
Kabir explained that within the period, the foundation funded treatment for about 3,000 urology patients, at a cost of over N140 million.
In addition, Kabir said that more than 17,000 patients with various eye problems received medical attention, with spending exceeding N30 million.
He added that the foundation also supported over 1,000 patients suffering from hernia and hydrocele, committing not less than N87 million to their care.
Kabir noted that patients with minor ailments were examined, treated, given free medication, and discharged.
“Those requiring surgery had their operations fully funded by the foundation, including all associated expenses until discharge.
“The foundation has engaged some of the best medical teams and procured high-quality drugs and equipment for these interventions,” he said.
He explained that the foundation, established in 2016, is dedicated to supporting vulnerable groups through healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.
“Since its inception, it has also sponsored thousands of surgical procedures for patients from neighbouring states and even Niger Republic.
“Our aim is to ease the financial burden of healthcare for vulnerable individuals who struggle to meet basic needs,” Kabir added.
An ophthalmic nurse at the Katsina Eye Centre, Malam Ibrahim Lawal-Rabo, commended the initiative, noting its significance amid the country’s challenging economic climate.
He said such philanthropic efforts complement government initiatives and help bridge healthcare gaps in underserved communities.
Some of the beneficiaries praised the foundation’s support and urged government agencies, private organisations, and wealthy individuals to emulate Mangal’s humanitarian gesture.
