Shock and outrage have gripped residents of Ibadan following a horrifying incident in which a man allegedly set his estranged lover ablaze after their relationship turned sour.
The suspect, identified as Lawal Faruq, was arrested for dousing Omolola Hassan with petrol and setting her on fire at the Mami Market located within Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to eyewitnesses, the tragic event unfolded after a heated confrontation between the two lovers. The suspect, said to be enraged over the breakup, reportedly poured petrol on Omolola and ignited it, leaving her with severe burns.
Witnesses recounted how soldiers stationed at the barracks swiftly intervened, putting out the flames and rescuing the victim. She was immediately rushed to Yawiri Hospital, Akobo, where she is receiving urgent medical attention.
Faruq, who was apprehended shortly after the attack, allegedly told investigators that he acted out of anger because the two had once taken an oath never to separate.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shocking act.
Residents of the area have condemned the attack, describing it as “a barbaric act of jealousy and cruelty.” They have also called on the police to ensure that justice is served.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing trend of domestic violence and the need for stronger legal and social measures to protect victims of abusive relationships.
