In a bizarre twist of crime and deception, the Enugu State Police Command has arrested a young man who allegedly staged his own kidnapping and extorted a ransom of N2 million from his unsuspecting parents.
According to police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending investigation, conspired with accomplices to fake his abduction, sending distress messages and demands for ransom to his terrified family.
“The parents, deeply distressed and fearing for their son’s life, paid the N2 million ransom as demanded by the supposed kidnappers,” DSP Ndukwe said. “However, our investigation revealed that the entire incident was orchestrated by the ‘victim’ himself.”
The police said the suspect went into hiding after collecting the money but was eventually tracked and arrested following a tactical operation.
“This is a classic case of greed and betrayal of trust,” Ndukwe added. “The suspect will be charged to court soon for conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence.”
The incident has sent shockwaves across the state, with many calling for stiffer penalties for such deceptive crimes.
Authorities have urged families to always report suspected kidnapping cases to security agencies for swift and professional handling.
