MAKARFI QUITS PDP BoT SECRETARY POST, SAYS PARTY CAN’T BREAK ZONING RULES

Borno State Government

In a bold move shaking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Kaduna State governor Ahmed Makarfi has stepped down as Secretary of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), insisting that the PDP must not abandon its long-standing zoning principle.

Makarfi’s resignation comes barely 48 hours after Kabiru Turaki, former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, emerged as the new PDP National Chairman at the party’s convention. Turaki, like Makarfi, hails from the North-West — a development the former governor says contradicts the spirit of equity enshrined in the party’s power-sharing arrangement.

In a letter addressed to BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara on Monday, Makarfi stated that he could not, in good conscience, retain his seat when both the chairman and BoT secretary now come from the same geopolitical zone.

He stressed that the PDP must lead by example on fairness and balance, warning that ignoring zoning could deepen internal tensions at a time the opposition party is seeking to rebuild its national influence.

His resignation adds a new twist to the post-convention fallout, with party insiders already hinting at fresh debates over restructuring leadership roles to restore regional equilibrium.
