A coalition of more than 1,000 lawyers under the aegis of the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) has called on the Senate to reject the nomination of Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement issued on Friday, the group expressed concerns over what it described as the “lack of broad consultation” and “possible conflict of interest” surrounding the nomination. The lawyers argued that appointing Amupitan could undermine public confidence in the electoral body ahead of future elections.
ALDRAP maintained that the Senate has a constitutional duty to ensure that only individuals with unquestionable integrity, neutrality, and professional independence are confirmed for such sensitive national roles.
The group also urged President Bola Tinubu to consider nominating a non-partisan individual with proven administrative competence and experience in electoral management to strengthen the credibility of the nation’s democratic institutions.
As of press time, the Senate had yet to respond to the lawyers’ petition, while public debate continues over the suitability of Amupitan’s nomination.
