Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has issued a dire warning to the federal government, urging swift action to mitigate the escalating food crisis and electricity tariff hikes, or risk facing mass protests.
Drawing parallels to the recent violent demonstrations in Kenya, Lawan cautioned that Nigerians’ patience is wearing thin.
Speaking during a Senate session, Lawan stressed the urgency of the situation, highlighting the severe hunger plaguing the nation and the empty state of the country’s silos.
He implored the Senate to immediately engage the executive on the issue.
“If we don’t act now, the streets will speak, and we won’t like what they say,” Lawan stated.
Senator Karimi Sunday Steve and Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume supported the motion, emphasizing the skyrocketing food prices and Nigeria’s precarious position on the global food crisis list.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio acknowledged the decade-long challenges contributing to the crisis, including farmer-herder clashes, and announced measures to boost food production, such as the distribution of fertilizers to states and senators for farmers.
The Senate unanimously called on the federal government to address the food and security crises to alleviate the growing hunger and suffering among Nigerians.
