Lagos Prank Backfires: Creator Nearly Lynched Over Fake AK-47 “Terrorist” Skit

Borno State Government

A Lagos-based content creator narrowly escaped death on Thursday after a stunt depicting Northerners as terrorists spiraled out of control, provoking panic and mob aggression from shocked residents.

Eyewitnesses said the young man, armed with what appeared to be an AK-47 rifle, attempted to film a “prank” in which he portrayed Northerners as violent extremists. But the scene instantly triggered fear in the busy neighbourhood, with people mistaking the act for a real threat.

Before he could explain himself, an angry crowd descended on him, beating him severely. Observers say the outcome could have been far worse if armed security operatives had been on the ground—and forced to react to what looked like an active threat.

Security analysts warn that such dangerous stunts could easily result in fatal shootings, mass panic, stampedes, or mob justice.

“This should be a wake-up call for all content creators,” a community leader said. “Not everything is a prank. When you introduce weapons, ethnic profiling, or simulated violence—especially in today’s tense security climate—you’re playing with fire.”

Authorities are expected to review the incident as part of ongoing efforts to curb reckless social media antics that endanger public safety.

Residents who witnessed the chaos said the young man was “lucky to be alive.”
