Fear and frustration grip the residents of Kerau community in Katsina State as a severely eroded 50-year-old drainage channel continues to endanger lives, homes, and health, especially with the rainy season approaching.
The once-functional canal has become a source of daily anxiety for families like those of Alhaji Yusuf Dankano and Alhaji Musa Jikamshi, who have spent years trying to curb the erosion — without success. Their efforts, alongside numerous complaints sent to the state government, have yielded no results.
“This drainage is a death trap,” said Umar Abubakar, one of many residents whose health and safety are now under constant threat. With stagnant water and uncovered drains, the area has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and diseases. “We’re battling erosion, illness, and neglect all at once,” added Habibu Ahmed Dara.
For mothers like Rabi’atu Ahmed Danbaba, the damage goes beyond infrastructure. “Water is now a daily struggle. During rains, the area floods, and during drought, there’s nothing. Our children are suffering,” she lamented.
The residents are calling on Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua, Hon. Sani Aliyu Danlami, Hon. Abubakar Aliyu Albaba, and Governor Dikko Umar Radda to take urgent action by constructing a new drainage system. They argue that Kerau, a key contributor to the state economy, deserves better infrastructure and attention.
With the rainy season fast approaching, Kerau’s fate now rests on how swiftly the government responds — before erosion swallows more than just homes.
