In a bold move to boost agricultural productivity across Katsina State, Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda has announced the state’s latest initiative: the procurement of motorized tillers and the revival of the Songhai farm centers.
This announcement was made during the 2025 Citizens Budget participation event and the launch of a Community Development Programme (CDP) in Funtua Zone.
Governor Radda revealed that the state government has placed an order for motorized tillers, which will be distributed to farmers across Katsina.
Additionally, mechanized farm service centers will be established in all thirty-four local governments, offering easy access to heavy-duty farm equipment at subsidized rates.
In a significant development for the region, the governor also confirmed the revival of Songhai farm centers in Katsina and the establishment of a new one in Suduje, Daura Emirate, in collaboration with the National Agricultural and Land Development Authority (NALDA).
These centers will serve as hubs for modern agricultural training and practices, equipping farmers with the skills needed to thrive.
“We are committed to providing direct support to our farmers, stocking these centers with combine harvesters, tractors, and motorized tillers to ease cultivation for small and medium-scale farmers,” Governor Radda stated, stressing that the government will no longer offer farming implements on unfavorable terms such as hire purchase.
Alhaji Lawal Sani Matazu, Chairman of Funtua Local Government, urged Northwest Governors to unite in urging the Federal Government to address the region’s security challenges, a key factor in enabling socio-economic recovery.
Bello Abubakar Annur, President of the Maize Farmers Association of Nigeria, also called for collaboration with investors to convert forests into farmlands, a crucial step in enhancing both security and agriculture.
