In a bold move to strengthen women’s economic independence and reduce poverty, the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in partnership with the Katsina State Coalition of Women Organization Initiative, has empowered 1,050 women with a ₦21 million cash grant to boost small-scale businesses across the state.
The empowerment initiative, fully supported by Governor Malam Dikko Umar Radda, PhD, OON, came after an intensive eight-month vocational training programme that equipped participants with essential entrepreneurial skills. Each beneficiary received ₦20,000 as start-up capital to establish or expand their businesses.
The presentation ceremony, held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at the Bouquet Hall of the Old Government House, Katsina, was attended by top government officials, women leaders, and community representatives.
Among those present were the representative of the Katsina State Hisbah Board, Malam Abu Ammar, who advised beneficiaries to spend the funds judiciously, and Malam Aminu Yammawa, who emphasized the need for sound financial management to ensure sustainable growth.
Prominent women leaders, including Hajiya Mai Jidda Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir, wife of the Chief of Staff to the Katsina State Government, Hajiya Maryam, Malama from Madina, and Hajiya Maryam Saulawa, commended the initiative, describing it as a landmark effort to promote women’s self-reliance and inclusive development.
In her address, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Hajiya Binta Hussaini Dan Gani, lauded Governor Radda for his consistent support of women empowerment programmes, noting that the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to improving livelihoods through skills acquisition and entrepreneurship.
She urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely to uplift their families and contribute meaningfully to community development.
The event ended on a jubilant note, as the women expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Katsina State Government and SEMA for providing them with the tools and opportunities to transform their lives and businesses.
