…CP Bello Shehu Commends Officers’ Bravery, Reaffirms Unwavering Commitment to Internal Security
In a dramatic display of courage and tactical precision, the Katsina State Police Command has successfully foiled two separate kidnapping attempts in Sabuwa Local Government Area, rescuing a total of 28 kidnapped victims from the hands of armed bandits.
The daring operations, which unfolded between Monday night and Tuesday morning, underscore the relentless efforts of the command under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Bello Shehu, psc, fdc, MNIM, to rid the state of the menace of banditry and restore peace to affected communities.
At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, a distress call from a good Samaritan alerted the Sabuwa Police Division to an active kidnapping situation. Armed bandits had blocked the Sabuwa–Kaya Road near Inno Junction, abducting fourteen (14) innocent travelers.
In swift response, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) led a crack team of operatives to the scene. A fierce gun duel erupted as the bandits attempted to flee with their captives. Overwhelmed by the superior firepower and tactics of the police, the criminals were forced to abandon their victims and flee into the bush.
All 14 abductees were rescued alive and unhurt.
However, the joy was dimmed by the tragic loss of a civilian, 27-year-old Abba of Funtua town, who was shot and killed by the fleeing bandits during the initial phase of the attack.
Just hours earlier, at about 11:27 p.m. on Monday, July 28, the Sabuwa Division had also responded to another distress call — this time from Zagaizagi village, where bandits stormed the community under the cover of darkness and kidnapped residents.
Again, police operatives raced to the scene and confronted the attackers in a heated exchange of gunfire. The gallant officers successfully rescued another 14 kidnapped victims and recovered two rustled cows.
Unfortunately, the bandits killed two villagers before fleeing into the surrounding forest.
Reacting to the twin successes, Commissioner of Police Bello Shehu praised the swift response and bravery of his officers, describing the operations as “exceptional acts of valour.”
“These back-to-back victories are a testament to our men’s professionalism, courage, and readiness to confront criminal elements head-on,” the Commissioner said. “We deeply regret the loss of innocent lives, but we are grateful for the lives saved and the message sent to bandits — Katsina is not a safe haven for crime.”
He further assured residents of the command’s continued commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, urging the public to maintain trust in the police and report suspicious movements promptly.
“We count on your cooperation. Timely and accurate information can save lives. Let us join hands to reclaim our communities,” CP Shehu stated.
As news of the rescue spread, residents of Sabuwa and neighboring LGAs hailed the police for their timely intervention, calling for continued reinforcement of security presence in rural communities frequently targeted by bandits.
Local youth leader, Ibrahim Musa of Kaya Town, said:
“These bandits used to operate freely. But now, they know the police are serious. What happened this week gives us hope.”
Civil society groups and traditional leaders have also lauded the efforts of the command, calling on federal and state governments to increase logistics support for the Katsina Police to enhance their reach and effectiveness in the most volatile areas.
The police have launched manhunts to track down the fleeing suspects involved in both incidents. Intelligence-led operations are being intensified across known bandit routes and hideouts.
Meanwhile, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, confirmed that rescued victims have been reunited with their families, and investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute the masterminds behind the attacks.
“We will not rest until these criminals are brought to justice,” DSP Aliyu declared. “This is a warning to all bandit groups: Katsina Police Command is coming for you.”
As Katsina State continues its fight against banditry and violent crime, this latest success serves as both a morale booster and a firm message — that the days of unchecked terror in rural communities are numbered.
