A bold move to safeguard public health and restore community dignity, Katsina Local Government has launched a decisive two-week campaign aimed at eradicating open defecation across its 290 communities.
Addressing journalists in Katsina, Hon. Isah Miqdad AD-Saude unveiled the initiative tagged “A New Chapter for Katsina LG”, which combines awareness, sensitization, and sanitation exercises. Over 70 sanitation workers have already been mobilized to clean and rehabilitate identified open defecation sites, refuse areas, and public spaces.
“Our goal is clear: to secure certification from UNICEF and relevant agencies declaring Katsina LG open defecation free (ODF). This is not about self-declaration—it is a rigorous process,” Miqdad said.
Highlighting the dangers of poor sanitation, he noted that open defecation fuels outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea, while costing Nigeria an estimated 1.3% of its GDP annually. “This is about changing habits and saving lives. It is about putting dignity at the center of our collective responsibility,” he stressed.
The council is calling on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and youth organisations to spearhead awareness campaigns. “From the pulpits of our mosques to the gathering grounds of our communities, your voices will make the difference,” Miqdad appealed.
Looking beyond the immediate target, the LG plans to strengthen community monitoring, sustain sanitation education, promote handwashing culture, and invest in waste management services to prevent a relapse.
He also acknowledged the technical and financial support of NG-SURWASH, UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Katsina State Government, noting their critical role in advancing water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions.
“Our broader vision is to make Katsina LG one of the cleanest and healthiest in the state. Every household must have safe sanitation, every community must be free of open defecation, and every child must grow up in an environment safe from preventable diseases,” Miqdad declared.
He appealed to journalists to amplify the campaign, stressing that the fight against open defecation is about saving lives, protecting children, and preserving society’s dignity.
“With the voices of our leaders, the commitment of our people, and the support of our partners, In shaa Allah, Katsina LG will succeed and stand as a model for others to emulate,” he concluded.
