Katsina Govt Debunks ₦24 Billion Scholarship Claims, Demands Retraction from The Guardian

Katsina State Ministry of Information and Culture has firmly refuted claims published by The Guardian Newspaper alleging that the state government spent ₦24 billion on foreign scholarships for 41 medical students studying MBBS in Egypt. In a press release issued on January 1, 2025, the government clarified that the actual expenditure stands at ₦2.4 billion.

The Honourable Commissioner of Information and Culture, Dr. Bala Salisu Zango, described the report as inaccurate and misleading, emphasizing that the funds covered tuition, accommodation, books, upkeep allowances, residence permits, and airfare for five years.

“This initiative under Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda’s leadership is a strategic investment in the state’s healthcare sector, aimed at addressing the shortage of medical professionals,” the Commissioner stated.

Highlighting the rigorous selection process, he noted that beneficiaries were chosen from all 34 local government areas to ensure equitable access and impactful outcomes.

The government has demanded a retraction from The Guardian, warning of legal action if a corrigendum is not published promptly. “Accurate reporting is essential for public trust and informed discourse. Misrepresentation undermines these efforts,” the statement concluded.

Katsina State remains committed to transparency and the strategic development of its healthcare system.
