Abuja—In a dramatic turn that could redraw Nigeria’s political map ahead of 2027, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is set to formally defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, multiple sources have confirmed.
Governor Yusuf, currently the only sitting governor elected on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), arrived in Abuja over the weekend to conclude final arrangements for the high-profile switch—an event insiders describe as “sealed and irreversible.”
Sources familiar with the development told Daily Nigerian that the governor will be received by Vice President Kashim Shettima, alongside APC National Chairman Yitwalda Nentawe, in what is expected to be a carefully choreographed political homecoming.
The defection has triggered swift movements within APC ranks in Kano. Party leader Abdullahi Ganduje was urgently recalled from a private trip to Dubai, while the state APC chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, reportedly cut short his lesser hajj to oversee the issuance of the APC membership card to the governor.
According to party sources, the symbolic registration is expected to take place at Governor Yusuf’s Diso Ward in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, underscoring APC’s intention to stage the defection not just as a formal switch, but as a grassroots political statement.
