The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Kano State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced a complete boycott of all Kano State Government activities.
This unprecedented move comes in response to ongoing harassment, intimidation, and physical assaults on journalists by the state government and its agents.
“We have exhausted all efforts to engage the government to address these issues, yet there has been no improvement,” stated Aminu Ahmed Garko, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel.
“The government’s persistent maltreatment of our members is unacceptable.”The boycott means no press conferences, government events, or interviews with state officials will be covered by the Correspondents’ Chapel until there is a “tangible commitment to press freedom and the safety of journalists.
“The journalists’ union expressed deep concern over the government’s preference for non-professionals over trained journalists, viewing it as a deliberate policy to undermine the press.
“This is a stand for a free and independent press, which is crucial for a functioning democracy.
We will not allow our members to be mistreated and intimidated,” Garko concluded.
