The Kaduna State Government has renovated and upgraded one Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in each of the state’s 255 wards and employed additional health workers to manage the facilities, in a renewed push to strengthen healthcare delivery.
The Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, stated this during a one-day #open health sector dialogue with the theme “Community Accountability in Primary Healthcare is Timely and Essential.”
She was represented by the Commissioner for Health at the event organised by the Kaduna State Accountability Mechanism (KADMAM) in collaboration with the Kaduna State Ministry of Health and development partners.
“She further explained that the government has also rehabilitated several secondary health facilities and sustained routine immunization for pregnant women and children across the state.
According to her, Kaduna State remains committed to prioritizing maternal, newborn and child health because no society can progress when mothers die from preventable causes or when children lack access to a healthy start in life..”
She reaffirmed that the government is dedicated to strengthening the primary healthcare system, expanding access to essential services and improving the responsiveness of health facilities.”
Dr. Balarabe emphasized that the government would continue working with all stakeholders to ensure that every woman, child and family in Kaduna State receives the quality healthcare they deserve she said.”
She thanked KADMAM for its consistent advocacy and for convening a forum that brings together policymakers, practitioners, academics and community leaders to strengthen accountability and enhance quality healthcare delivery.
In his welcome address, KADMAM Co-Chair, Garba Muhammad, said the dialogue focused on community accountability in primary healthcare financing. He noted that the theme reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring that healthcare financing decisions remain transparent, inclusive and responsive to the needs of communities.
“He added that KADMAM is committed to deepening citizens’ oversight to strengthen health systems and safeguard the lives of women and children in Kaduna State.
Also speaking, the Emir of Zazzau and Chairman of the Kaduna State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, said the council remains committed to intensifying grassroots sensitization. He urged families, particularly pregnant women to attend antenatal care, seek skilled delivery in hospitals and ensure full immunization for their children to protect them from preventable diseases.
He noted that traditional institutions continue to play a vital role in mobilizing communities, stressing that the health of mothers and children forms the foundation of a prosperous society.
He assured that the council would not relent in championing life-saving practices across communities.”
Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of UNICEF, the Gates Foundation, FCDO Lafiya, SLAM OGP and AKASA.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of an award to the Emir of Zazzau for exemplary traditional leadership.
