Judicial activities across Kaduna State have been brought to a halt as members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) commenced an indefinite strike over unmet demands for financial autonomy and improved welfare.
The strike, which began on Monday, forced the closure of all state and federal courts, including Sharia and customary courts. The union said it took the action after several appeals and letters sent to the state government since September were ignored.
According to JUSUN, the strike became inevitable due to the government’s failure to implement full financial autonomy for the judiciary and to address long-standing issues such as unpaid salaries, poor welfare, and unreviewed salary structures.
At some court premises, staff were seen outside assisting members of the public with affidavit processing, even as courtrooms remained locked.
JUSUN’s demands include the payment of outstanding salaries, a review of salary structures, and settlement of leave and transport allowances dating back to 2016.
The decision to embark on the industrial action was reached during an emergency congress held on October 13, where members resolved that the strike would continue indefinitely until the government meets all demands.
The shutdown has already disrupted legal proceedings across the state, leaving many lawyers and litigants stranded and uncertain about when normal court operations will resume.
