The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kebbi State chapter, has firmly rejected allegations by former Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President, AbdulWaheed Ibrahim Umar, that the media underreported the achievements of Kebbi State and its government.
In a strongly worded statement issued in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday, Chairman of the chapel, Alhaji Kabiru Wurma, described Umar’s remarks as “misleading” and an apparent attempt to curry favour with Governor Nasir Idris during the NLC retreat held in the state.
Wurma said journalists were stunned when Umar, speaking at the Presidential Lodge, claimed to have toured Kebbi to verify Governor Idris’ achievements within less than three years in office.
“We were taken aback by the comment. It is not only inaccurate but dismissive of the hard work and professionalism of journalists operating in Kebbi,” Wurma stated.
The NUJ chairman maintained that no governor in the country has enjoyed the level of consistent and positive media coverage accorded Governor Idris, insisting that virtually every project executed by the administration has been documented and widely reported.
He further recalled that during his visit to Kebbi on October 23, 2024, the incumbent NLC President, Joe Ajaero, openly commended the governor, noting that positive stories about the state flow into the media space daily.
“There is hardly any project in Kebbi that has not been captured by journalists. The claim of underreporting is simply unfounded,” Wurma added.
The chapel urged public figures to verify facts before making sweeping statements that could undermine the credibility of media practitioners in the state.
