In a bold step towards lasting peace, the Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has announced plans to fund the education of children belonging to bandits as part of broader reconciliation efforts. This initiative was unveiled during a major peace dialogue held on Monday, May 19, 2025, in Kwari village. The event was convened by the Jibia People’s Forum under the leadership of Alhaji Gide Dahiru.
Present at the meeting were top stakeholders including Jibia LG Chairman Hon. Sirajo Ado and his deputy, Hon. Aminu Aliyu. Military representatives and key figures among the bandits, such as Audu Lankai and other well-known group leaders, were also in attendance to advance the ongoing peace discussions.
The reconciliation initiative, which has been unfolding over several sessions, initially involved setting conditions for the cessation of violence. Local residents demanded an end to attacks and protection for farming communities. In return, the bandits laid out their concerns—chief among them, the fair treatment regarding livestock ownership and a stop to extrajudicial killings.
Speaking on behalf of the bandits, Audu Lankai expressed support for the peace initiative, stressing the importance of continued dialogue and warning against political interference. He highlighted the need for mutual respect and faithful implementation of the terms agreed upon.
Another group leader, Sule Gurbi, reported a decline in violent incidents since talks began and urged participants to maintain honesty and trust as the foundation for sustained peace. Discussions also spotlighted the needs of displaced persons and the urgent requirement for basic infrastructure like water, healthcare, and education.
Hon. Sirajo Ado praised the progress made and reiterated his administration’s resolve to support peace-building efforts. As part of this commitment, he announced that the local government would cover six years of schooling for the children of repentant bandits, aiming to integrate them positively into society.
Representing the Jibia People’s Forum, Sheikh Barr. Ibrahim Sabi’u advocated for community-led conflict resolution and cautioned against any betrayal of the peace pact. He also encouraged displaced residents to begin returning in time for the planting season, stressing the importance of collective cooperation.
