Tragedy struck in Nigeria’s capital on Saturday as a 73-year-old Israeli national, Avi Warshaviak, died after suddenly falling ill at a hotel in the Garki area of Abuja.

Warshaviak, who was staying with his wife at Corinthia Villa Hotel, reportedly developed serious health complications around 9:51 a.m. on June 28. Hotel staff immediately rushed him to the Asokoro General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident was swiftly reported to authorities by the hotel’s Chief Security Officer, Okorie Emmanuel, who alerted the Garki Divisional Police Headquarters at approximately 11:23 a.m.

Responding to the distress call, police officers visited both the hotel and the hospital, documented the circumstances surrounding the event, and arranged for the transfer of the body to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

While the exact cause of death remains unknown pending medical examination, investigators say there were no immediate signs of foul play.

Efforts are currently underway to notify the Israeli Embassy in Nigeria for appropriate consular actions and family liaison.

Authorities have assured the public and diplomatic officials that all necessary protocols are being followed to ensure transparency and due process.

The Israeli expatriate community in Abuja has expressed shock over the sudden demise, as tributes begin to pour in for Warshaviak, described by those who knew him as a “quiet and kind man.”
