INEC SHIFTS GOALPOST: Parties Get Fresh Deadline for 2027 Election Preparations

Borno State Government

The Independent National Electoral Commission has adjusted its timetable for the 2027 General Election, granting political parties more breathing space to prepare their internal processes.

The decision followed concerns raised during a high-level meeting with political parties on March 24 over the earlier deadline for submitting party membership registers.

In a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission announced that parties are now free to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Crucially, the deadline for submitting party registers—initially fixed for April 21—has now been extended to May 10, 2026, ensuring compliance with the statutory 21-day requirement before primaries.

The Independent National Electoral Commission emphasized that strict adherence to the revised schedule is vital for a smooth and credible electoral process.

With the политическая (political) calendar now reset, attention shifts to how parties will navigate the new timeline as the road to 2027 elections gathers momentum.
