A major corruption scandal has rocked the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command after four serving police officers were arrested for allegedly extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, revealed that the officers are currently in custody, describing them as members of a criminal syndicate that operated illegal checkpoints across the nation’s capital.
According to the police commissioner, investigations uncovered that the suspects allegedly mounted unauthorized roadblocks where motorists were routinely intimidated and forced to pay money, in clear violation of police regulations and the law.
CP Sanusi said the officers’ arrest followed the extortion of the ICPC chairman, an incident that exposed the activities of the rogue network.
He condemned the conduct of the officers, stressing that the Command would not shield any personnel involved in corruption, extortion, or abuse of office.
The commissioner assured residents that the illegal checkpoint syndicate would be dismantled completely and that all officers found culpable would face disciplinary action and prosecution.
He reaffirmed the FCT Police Command’s resolve to rid the Force of bad eggs, restore public confidence, and ensure policing is carried out with integrity, professionalism, and respect for the rights of citizens.
