Ikorodu Crowns Yari First Baba Isale

Borno State Government

Former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Abdul’Aziz Abubakar Yari, has added a royal feather to his cap as he was on Saturday bestowed with the prestigious chieftaincy title of the first Baba Isale of Ikorodu Kingdom. The honour was conferred by HRH Alaiyeluwa Oba (Dr.) Engr. Kabiru Adewale Shotobi (Adegorushen V), the Ayangburen of Ikorodu and paramount ruler of the Ikorodu Division.

The colourful ceremony, held at the historic Ayangburen Palace, drew political leaders, traditional rulers, captains of industry and cultural enthusiasts who gathered to witness what many described as a landmark moment in the kingdom’s history. The Baba Isale title—reserved for personalities who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, generosity, and commitment to community development—has never before been conferred on anyone in Ikorodu.

Oba Shotobi, in his remarks, said the honour was a recognition of Senator Yari’s “remarkable contributions to nation-building, statesmanship, and bridge-building across Nigeria.” The monarch praised the former governor for fostering unity beyond regional lines and promoting development-driven partnerships between northern and southern communities.

“Senator Yari embodies the values of strength, humility, and service. By naming him the first Baba Isale of Ikorodu, we celebrate not only his achievements but the spirit of national cohesion he represents,” the Ayangburen declared to loud applause.

Senator Yari, visibly moved by the warmth and hospitality of the Ikorodu people, described the honour as “deeply humbling.” He expressed gratitude to the monarch, the council of chiefs, and residents of the kingdom, pledging to strengthen socio-cultural ties and support developmental initiatives within the community.

“This title is not just a symbol—it is a responsibility,” Yari said. “I will continue to work for unity, peace, and progress wherever I find myself.”

The event featured traditional dances, royal blessings, prayers, and colourful displays by cultural troupes, showcasing the rich heritage of the Ikorodu Kingdom. Many guests noted that the ceremony reflects the rising trend of inter-regional recognition of leaders across Nigeria—a positive step towards national integration.

For Ikorodu, the installation of Senator Yari as its first Baba Isale marks a new chapter in its evolving history of honouring individuals who contribute to the kingdom’s growth and uphold its values.

As the drums faded and the palace courtyard emptied, one thing remained clear: Ikorodu has opened its arms to a new son, and Yari has stepped into a role that carries both prestige and purpose.
