Journalist are advised to upholds, promote Islamic Principles and avoid over portrayal of violence negativity in reporting – Ibrahim Siraj PhD.
The Resource Person of the one day workshop themed on the Ethics of Journalism: Guide to Best Islamic Practice Dr Ibrahim Siraj has called on Muslim Journalist to upholds, promote Islamic Principles and avoid over portrayal of violence in their reporting explained that the Islamic Principles and ethics of reporting condemned sensationalism, exaggeration and bias reporting.
Dr Siraj made the disclosure yesterday during a one day workshop organized by the International Institution of Islamic Thought (IIIT) Nigeria Office Kano State which was collaborated with Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) Kano State Chapter held in NUJ Kano State Secretariat.
Dr Siraj dewelt on the importance of the use of ethics and Islamic Principles also emphasized on the canons of Journalism which includes the following:Truth, Objectivity, Accuracy, Fairness, Independence and responsibility stressed that adhering to these principles Journalist can upholds the values of truth, justice, compassion and contribute to a more informed just and peaceful society.
Earlier the coordinator of the Institute, Kano State. Dr Saidu Ahmad Dukawa who have represented by malam Mustapha Ibrahim chinade a veteran Journalist explained that the workshop was aimed at equipping the journalist with knowledge on ethics of Journalism guiding them to the best Islamic Principles while coordinating their assignment.
Similarly Dr Bala Muhammad who was chairman of the workshop advised the participants to properly utilize what they have learned in the workshop and retrain other in their working places.
The participants have divided into eight (8) where they have given a group works in order to find out a Hadith and Qur’anic verses, suggested the best ways that could be used in guiding the Journalistic work, the topics includes Accuracy, Fairness, objectives, privacy and decency, rewards and gratification e.t.c
Dr Bala Muhammad suggested that the incoming NUJ leaders, Kano State Chapter. Should collaborate with MacArthur foundation and CITAD to create the next workshop on Communication laws advised that the Journalist should be mindful of their utterances.
Mal.Aisar fagge has also suggested that the participants should try as much as they can to see that they teach as many people as can on what they have learned during the workshop and properly utilize it in their work despite the media challenges.
In his remarks the chairman of NUJ Kano State Chapter Comrade Abas Ibrahim has finally recommended that the workshop is timely considering the media in Kano has been increased nearly all the times.
The workshop was graced by many journalist who represented their working places across the state.
