House seeks establishment of orphanage regulatory agency

A Bill for an Act to Establish Federal Orphanage Regulatory Agency in Nigeria, 2021 has passed the second reading in the House of Representatives.
Presenting the Bill, the sponsor, Mr Adisa Owalabi, stated that the objective is to establish a regulatory body that would be saddled with the responsibility of coordinating and regulating all orphanage operators across the country.
This according to the lawmaker would ensure a child’s right Standard and needs with a less strenuous procedure to adopt a child.
“It will interest you to know that many orphanage operators are not legally registered to operate because of the attention given most orphanages, while they are still from the voluntary organization, which has opened room for criminals to engage in these activities to carry out their evil intentions of child trafficking, baby factories and extortion of possible adaptors of the children,” he said.
He disclosed that in 2020, the Police recovered 24 babies from a baby factory disguised as an orphanage in Port-Harcourt.
Mr Owalabi added that there are also rampant cases of children missing at the orphanages in 2019.
