In a landmark move to streamline Nigeria’s electoral process, members of the House of Representatives have sponsored a bill proposing that elections for the President, State Governors, National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, and Local Government Area Councils be held simultaneously.
The bill, championed by Hon. (Barr.) Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere (Ikenga Imo) and co-sponsored by Hon. Abdullmaleek Danga, Hon. Aliyu Mustapha, Hon. Francis Waive, and 13 other lawmakers, suggests that a unified election day will be set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in collaboration with key stakeholders.
The proposed legislation aims to enhance electoral efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize electoral violence by consolidating the electoral process.
If passed, this could mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s democratic landscape, making it easier for citizens to participate in all levels of elections on a single, historic day.
