HONOUR FOR A HERO: President Tinubu Confers GCFR on Late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua — Nephew Musa Yar’adua Pays Emotional Tribute

The legacy of one of Nigeria’s most revered patriots, Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (Tafidan Katsina), echoed through the nation once again as President Bola Tinubu posthumously conferred on him the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) — Nigeria’s highest national honour.

In an emotional post on his official X account, Musa Umar Yar’adua, nephew of the late statesman, described the honour as a fitting tribute to a man whose “sacrifice laid the foundation for the democracy we enjoy today.”

Quoting a powerful letter written from Abakaliki Prison to his son, Buhari Yar’Adua, the late General wrote:
“I am today in prison not because I want political power or to be president as most people think. I do what I do because I love you… because I don’t want my children to grow up in a country that has no future, a country that you cannot be proud of.”

Musa Yar’adua called his late uncle both a hero and an uncle, saying, “That love for Nigeria and unwavering courage cost him everything. But his legacy lives on in our freedom, in our hope, and in the pride we feel today.”

Major General Yar’Adua, who died in prison in 1997 under the Abacha regime, remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures — a soldier turned democrat whose dream of a better Nigeria endures in the hearts of many.

As the nation continues to chart its path forward, this latest national recognition cements his place in the pantheon of Nigerian heroes — a reminder that true leadership is measured not by position, but by sacrifice.
