A fierce gun battle between troops and suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has left casualties on both sides following an attack on a military camp in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security sources said the clash occurred when insurgents launched a daring assault on the military position, triggering a prolonged exchange of gunfire with troops stationed at the camp.
According to the sources, troops responded with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat after intense fighting that lasted for several hours.
During a follow-up exploitation of the area, troops recovered several weapons and ammunition believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing insurgents.
Items recovered from the terrorists’ positions include bandoliers of PKT rounds, one AK-47 rifle, one BHT machine gun, two mortar bombs and four hand grenades.
Security sources also disclosed that blood stains and drag marks were discovered outside the camp, indicating that some of the insurgents sustained casualties during the encounter.
In a related development, troops reportedly intercepted an injured BHT fighter within the community who was being transported towards the camp. The suspect allegedly attempted to escape, prompting additional gunfire before he was subdued.
Military sources said the situation in the area has since been brought under control, while troops continue to secure the location and conduct follow-up operations to track down fleeing insurgents.
