Nigerian authorities are under mounting pressure to ensure the safety of Hamdiyya Sidi Shariff and her lawyer, Abba Hikima, following escalating threats against their lives.
The threats arise amid ongoing court proceedings where the Sokoto State Government has charged Hamdiyya with “insulting or abusive language” and “inciting disturbance” over her criticism of Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned the harassment, describing it as a grave violation of freedom of expression. “Hamdiyya and Barrister Hikima are facing persecution for speaking out and defending their rights, with disturbing reports of physical intimidation, stalking, and direct threats from individuals linked to the state,” said Isa Sanusi, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria.
During the last court hearing, Hikima was forced to seek armed police protection due to a hostile courtroom atmosphere.
Outside the court, the pair were reportedly followed, confronted, and threatened by alleged intelligence agents and thugs.
The situation worsened when Hamdiyya was abducted and severely beaten by armed men on November 13, 2024. The attack left her with serious injuries, raising alarms about her safety as she continues to face trial.
This heavy-handed response to dissent in Sokoto has drawn sharp criticism. “Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s intolerance of opposing voices is deeply troubling.
Silencing critics through intimidation and violence undermines democratic principles,” said Isa Sanusi.
Advocates are calling for the Sokoto State Government and Nigerian security agencies to shift their focus to addressing rampant insecurity in the region rather than targeting critics.
The safety of Hamdiyya and Barrister Hikima, especially during court appearances, must be prioritized to uphold justice and protect freedom of expression.
