A series of devastating bomb blasts has rocked Gwoza today, resulting in 18 deaths and over 30 injuries, according to Dr. Barkindo M. Saidu, Director General of Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
The first explosion occurred at 3 PM, when a female suicide bomber detonated a device amid a wedding celebration, causing immediate chaos and injuries.
Minutes later, another blast struck near the General Hospital, followed by a third explosion at a funeral service, where another female bomber targeted the mourning congregation.
As rescue operations were underway at the hospital, a fourth blast erupted, detonated by a teenage girl, adding to the carnage.
Dr. Saidu, who is on the ground in Gwoza, reported the following:The death toll stands at 18, including children, adults, females, and pregnant women.
Nineteen seriously injured victims have been transported to Maiduguri in four ambulances.Twenty-three others are awaiting military escort at the Medical Regimental Services (MRS) Clinic.
Emergency drugs have been mobilized to address shortages in Gwoza, and coordination for helicopter support is ongoing.The injuries range from abdominal ruptures to skull and limb fractures.
Additionally, a suspected suicide bomber has been reported in Pulka, heightening security concerns in the region.Dr. Saidu emphasized the dire situation, stating, “The degree of injuries is severe, and we are doing everything possible to manage the crisis.
“The tragic events underscore the urgent need for enhanced security and medical response in Gwoza and surrounding areas.
