Gunmen Strike Benue Road: One Dead, One Injured in Apa LGA Ambush

Borno State Government

Tragedy struck again in Benue State as suspected armed bandits ambushed two travellers in Apa Local Government Area, killing one and leaving another seriously injured.

The attack, according to security sources, occurred around 4:00 p.m. on January 24 along the Amoke–Odugbo road in Ukpogo village, Edikwu Ward. The victims—Mr. Joseph Okoh and Miss Aneh Sunday, both from Ogodumo in Adoka area of Otukpo Local Government Area—were riding a motorcycle when the assailants struck.

Residents said the attackers emerged suddenly from nearby bushes, opening fire and throwing the quiet rural stretch into panic. Passersby and villagers rushed to assist the victims, who were immediately taken to the Comprehensive Health Centre in Ugbokpo for emergency treatment.

Medical officials confirmed that Mr. Okoh died while receiving care, while Miss Sunday survived the attack and is currently responding to treatment under close medical supervision.

The incident triggered a swift security response, with troops of the Nigerian Army deployed to the area. Soldiers cordoned off the scene and launched a combing operation of surrounding forests and escape routes in an effort to track down the perpetrators.

Security sources said the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department has opened a full investigation, as authorities intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The attack has heightened anxiety among residents of Apa and neighbouring communities, many of whom rely on motorcycles for daily movement across rural roads. Locals are calling for increased patrols and sustained security presence to curb recurring attacks and restore confidence on key routes linking farming settlements.

As investigations continue, community leaders have appealed for calm while urging residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information that could help bring the attackers to justice.
