Tragedy struck in Kebbi State as gunmen launched a deadly ambush on security forces, killing nine soldiers, one policeman, and several civilians in Giro Masa Community.
The brutal attack, which occurred Tuesday night, also saw the assailants set ablaze two military gun trucks, leaving a trail of destruction and grief in the community.
Governor Nasir Idris, who visited victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital Birnin Kebbi, described the incident as “barbaric and heartbreaking,” lamenting the loss of gallant personnel who risk their lives to protect citizens.
“These are men who defend us daily. It is painful that they have fallen in such a cruel attack,” the governor said after inspecting the mortuary and emergency unit where the victims were taken.
He assured that the state government will foot the medical bills of the injured and provide support to the families of the fallen heroes, while reaffirming his administration’s resolve to strengthen security across the state.
Governor Idris also moved to the attack scene for an on-the-spot assessment, as security agencies intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators of the assault.
The incident has heightened concerns over rising insecurity in parts of Kebbi, with authorities vowing that those behind the ambush will be brought to justice.
