Yobe State’s strides towards achieving lasting peace and stability have been lauded by stakeholders, with the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Security to the Governor, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (Rtd.), affirming that Governor Mai Mala Buni’s strategic measures are reshaping the state into a model of safety and development.
Speaking at a security stakeholders’ meeting in Damaturu, the SSA Security described Governor Buni’s approach as “a bold and decisive step” in addressing the lingering insecurity that has plagued Yobe for years. He emphasized that the Governor’s leadership has not only restored hope but also set the state on a trajectory of sustainable peace.
Proactive Security Initiatives
General Abdulsalam outlined the key initiatives that have been instrumental in ensuring safety across the state. Among these is the establishment of a robust State Security Task Force that integrates the efforts of the Nigerian Army, Police, Civil Defence, and local vigilantes. This synergy, he noted, has led to a significant reduction in insurgency activities and other forms of crime.
“The Governor’s support for security agencies through the provision of logistics, operational vehicles, and intelligence tools has greatly enhanced their capacity to protect lives and property,” the SSA remarked.
He also highlighted the installation of surveillance equipment in critical locations, including border areas and highways, as a game-changer in preventing surprise attacks and monitoring movements in remote regions.
Community Involvement: A Game-Changer
Governor Buni’s administration has placed a strong emphasis on community involvement in security matters. Through town hall meetings and engagement with traditional rulers, the government has built trust and encouraged residents to actively participate in safeguarding their communities.
General Abdulsalam commended the people of Yobe for their cooperation, noting that information sharing between communities and security agencies has been pivotal in preempting threats.
Addressing Root Causes of Insecurity
Governor Buni’s commitment to addressing the root causes of insecurity, particularly unemployment, has also been praised. The administration’s youth empowerment programs, such as the Skills Acquisition Program and support for small businesses, are providing opportunities for young people to build sustainable livelihoods.
“By tackling unemployment and empowering our youth, the Governor is reducing the vulnerability of young people to criminal influences. This is a long-term solution that ensures a safer Yobe,” the SSA added.
A Promising Future
While acknowledging the challenges that remain, the SSA expressed optimism about the future of security in Yobe. He urged all stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders, and residents, to remain vigilant and committed to the shared goal of a peaceful state.
“The steps taken by Governor Buni are the right ones, and they are yielding results. With continued collaboration and support, Yobe will not only be safe but will serve as a benchmark for other states dealing with insecurity,” General Abdulsalam concluded.
As Yobe State continues its journey towards lasting peace, Governor Buni’s strategic vision and commitment remain central to ensuring the state becomes a haven of safety and progress for its people.
