The General Officer Commanding GOC 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General G.M. Ajose, has voiced concern over the continued neglect of key operational directives. He particularly cited lapses in the management of troop welfare and failure to adhere to standard administrative procedures across the Division’s Area of Responsibility (AOR).
Speaking during the opening session of a two-day capacity-building workshop for Commanding Officers, Operations Officers, Adjutants, and Administrative Officers, Major General Ajose emphasized the conference’s purpose—strengthening the capacity of staff officers to meet emerging operational and administrative demands. The theme of the event, “Enhancing Staff Officers’ Capabilities for Operational Efficiency,” reflects the Division’s commitment to professional development.
The GOC noted that while commanders issue directives, the responsibility for monitoring their execution falls squarely on senior staff officers and their teams. He expressed disappointment that long-standing instructions, such as those concerning the proper quality of meals for troops, are still not being followed.
“It was deeply troubling to witness troops being served substandard food, and even more concerning that some units appeared unaware of the directive entirely,” he stated.
He also raised concerns over non-adherence to the Division’s administrative movement and patrol protocols, citing examples of officers arriving at the seminar from Sokoto without proper weapon accountability procedures.
“These oversights erode our readiness and affect our operational performance,” Major General Ajose warned, urging attendees to actively participate in the training and abandon complacency. “Use this platform to its fullest. Let’s collectively raise the bar in operational delivery within the 8 Division.”
In his welcome address, Brigadier General B.O. Omopariola, Commander of 17 Brigade, underscored the significance of the forum as a means to foster professional excellence and interdepartmental collaboration. He highlighted the importance of sharpening the decision-making skills of staff officers to deal with modern-day operational complexities.
He expressed appreciation to the GOC for providing logistical backing for the event and encouraged all participants to strictly follow the conference guidelines for a productive outcome.
Gathering officers from across the 8 Division, the workshop aims to instill a deeper sense of accountability, improve adherence to directives, and drive operational excellence throughout the formation.
