A daring ambush on the convoy of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA was dramatically foiled near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State, with five suspected Lakurawa terrorists neutralised in a fierce gun battle.
The convoy, led by the Commander of Sector 2, Joint Task Force North West, was en route to visit frontline troops when heavily armed assailants emerged from forested terrain and opened fire in a surprise attack.
But the troops responded with superior firepower, overpowering the attackers and crushing the ambush before it could inflict casualties.
In a follow-up sweep of the area, soldiers uncovered a significant weapons cache, including an OJC gun, a PKT machine gun, two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, a bandolier of PKT ammunition, rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, five motorcycles, two mobile phones, and a camel bag containing ₦840,000 believed to be operational funds.
Security sources described the operation as a major tactical success, sending a strong warning to insurgent groups operating across the North West.
Troops have since intensified patrols around Mayama Hill and adjoining communities, maintaining heightened vigilance to prevent further terrorist activities in the area.
