….. . Urges Regional Leaders to Unite Against Security Threats

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has emphasized the need for the safe return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their communities. He also called for a comprehensive approach combining kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to effectively combat criminal activities in the Lake Chad Basin region.
General Musa made this statement on January 29, 2025, during the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum held in Maiduguri, Borno State.
In a press release, Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, noted that General Musa attended the forum to express his appreciation for the support extended to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF). He described the meeting as timely and reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring lasting peace in the region.
The CDS urged regional leaders and stakeholders to unite in addressing security challenges, emphasizing that collective action is crucial for stability and development in the Lake Chad Basin. He assured the governors of the Armed Forces’ continued support in tackling security threats and fostering peace.
Dignitaries at the forum included Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as Governors of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and their counterparts from Niger Republic, Chad, and Cameroon. Also present were the Theatre Commander of Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Waidi Shaibu, and senior military officers.
The Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), in collaboration with the Yobe State Government, the African Union, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), organized the event. The forum brought together key stakeholders, including regional governments, civil society organizations, United Nations agencies, donor partners, and research institutions, to explore strategies for sustainable peace and development in the region.
