Tragedy struck in the Ajah area of Lagos on Friday, July 19, as a gas explosion at a fast food restaurant left one person dead and 13 others injured. The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. at a restaurant located at No. 5 Spring Garden Estate along Orchid Road.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as a 20-year-old female employee, Kingsley Promise, who hailed from Akwa Ibom State. She succumbed to severe burns while receiving treatment at Gbagada General Hospital.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the explosion was triggered by a suspected gas leak, which resulted in a devastating fire that engulfed the eatery. The restaurant is reportedly owned by Uchechukwu Godwill Villason.
Police sources disclosed that 13 staff members sustained varying degrees of burns in the inferno and were swiftly taken to Gbagada General Hospital for urgent medical care.
In response, detectives from the local police division visited both the scene and the hospital to document evidence and assess the condition of the victims. The deceased’s body has been transferred to the morgue at the Mainland General Hospital in Yaba for autopsy.
Authorities have since launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Meanwhile, the Lagos Police Command is urging business owners—particularly those operating with gas-powered equipment—to conduct regular maintenance and safety checks to prevent such tragic occurrences.
